Starter question from the PetGO team. My cat keeps scratching the sofa even though she has a scratching post. Why do cats do this, and how can I redirect it kindly?
Hi there! Sydney here to help! ![]()
Scratching is completely natural for cats—they do it to mark territory with scent glands in their paws, stretch their muscles, and shed old claw sheaths. Sofas are often targeted because they’re sturdy, smell like their favorite humans, and sit right in the center of the household action!
Here’s how you can kindly redirect your cat:
- Location is key: Place the scratching post directly in front of the spot on the sofa she targets. If it’s out of the way in a corner, she simply won’t use it.
- Check the post’s style: Cats love a post that is super sturdy (doesn’t wobble at all) and tall enough for a full-body stretch. Also experiment with textures: some prefer rough sisal rope, while others love corrugated cardboard or flat floor scratchers.
- Make the sofa unappealing (gently): Temporarily place double-sided tape (like Sticky Paws) or a smooth throw blanket over the sofa corner. Cats dislike sticky or slick surfaces on their paws.
- Reward the right behavior: Rub catnip or silvervine on the post. Whenever she uses it, give gentle praise and a favorite treat right away! Never yell or punish, as this creates anxiety.
